Keep Your New Furniture Looking Great For Years!
Product Care & Cleaning Tips for Wood, Leather, Fabric & More!
HOW TO AVOID DAMAGE FROM THE ELEMENTS: If possible, avoid exposing wood furniture to direct sunlight, extreme heat or excessive humidity. Such extremes can cause cracking and fading.
HOW TO KEEP YOUR WOOD FURNITURE PROTECTED: Any spilled liquids, even water, should be wiped immediately with a soft, damp cloth in the direction of the wood grain. Liquid left on wood or wood veneer can cause unsightly marks, so consider using coasters and/or place-mats to protect your new wood furniture. We also recommend that you do not place rubber, plastic or hot objects directly on wood or wood veneer surfaces. As these may mark or ding the surface. Always place a protective layer of felt, cork, or glass under accessories, lamps or electronic components. Your wood furniture can be cleaned or dusted with a soft damp cloth. Again, wipe in the direction of the grain. If you chose to use a spray or cream furniture polish, be sure to put the product on the cloth and not directly on your wood furniture.
WHAT TO EXPECT WITH WOOD FURNITURE: Seasonal cracks, knots, wormholes and variations in wood graining are a normal characteristic of gorgeous wood furniture. Because wood is a natural product, stain variations either on the same piece or from piece to piece, should be expected. This occurs because each piece of wood takes the stain a just little differently. Wood products purchased together, tend to be very close, but wood purchased from different lots or at a later date may have a color and/or finish variation. All wood tends to darken over time as it is exposed to any light. This is a natural quality of wood and it enhances the exquisite beauty of the wood; Because of this darkening, we do not recommend that you permanently rest objects on exposed surfaces during the first two or three weeks. As the wood is darkening according to the unique light in your home, any object left in the same place for even a few days may show a lighter color beneath. After this “break-in” you may leave objects in place since the color development phase will be complete. *This break in period applies mostly to solid wood furniture particularly if it is finished in natural or lighter tone.
WHAT ABOUT DISTRESSING: Some wood furniture finishes are lightly to heavily distressed. As a result you may notice marks that may differ from the marks on the floor model. These marks are randomly done by the manufacturer, and they help to create an aged and antiqued appearance. No two of these hand finished pieces are exactly the same.
NEW FURNITURE ODOR: Just like a shiny new car, your beautiful new furniture may have a “new car,” better known as a “new furniture” smell. These odors are normal and caused by the various materials used in its construction. Since items remained boxed and/or wrapped for protection in our warehouse until your delivery is loaded onto our truck, your furniture just needs some time to air out. These mild “new furniture” odors will dissipate over time.
HANDMADE ITEMS: Your new wood furniture is largely or in some cases, entirely hand made. Therefore, some variations from the floor models may occur. There may be some very slight variations in dimensions. Also, because these are handmade items, the finish and or/color may vary from floor models, as discussed above.
OTHER INFORMATION OF NOTE: All units that contain doors are pre-leveled during prep. If the doors are not level in your house, it may be that your surface is uneven. Furniture leveling wedges are available at most hardware stores and should fix this problem. Please remember that if you alter your wood furniture in any way, you void any warranty and Barbo’s reserves the right to deny service to any and all altered pieces.
HOW TO AVOID DAMAGE FROM SUN AND HEAT: If possible, avoid placing fabric upholstery in direct sunlight or near extreme heat. To do so may cause uneven and/or premature fading or premature fabric and/or foam deterioration. Fabric fading is not warrantied by Barbo’s or by upholstery manufactures.
HOW TO KEEP YOU UPHOLSTERY LOOKING FRESH: Even though you will eventually see some core compression and the fabric may develop “comfort” wrinkles as you settle in to your new furniture, you can keep your furniture looking as fresh as possible. All loose cushions should be turned and pillows fluffed regularly to ensure even wear of fabrics and foams on your new upholstery. Also, you may consider regular vacuuming to remove debris and to help keep fabrics fresh. However, it is not advisable to vacuum down filled cushions. Use a soft brush or whisk broom instead.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT FABRICS: Every fabric is different and therefore will have different inherent characteristics that make it unique and beautiful. Some fabrics, especially crushed velvets, microsuedes and polysuedes can have color variations caused by the angle of the light hitting the surfaces. Also, many fabrics will develop pilling with use. Just like a cozy sweater, these are just the fabrics shedding excess fibers and it is perfectly normal. A fabric shaver can easily remove excess pills from your fabrics. Also, keep in mind that fabrics are dyed by lots, and as in any handmade item, some variations in color and shade can occur from dye lot to dye lot. The overall comfort may also feel different from the floor model that you sampled. This is caused because every piece of upholstery needs time to “break in” and if you chose a different fabric than the floor sample piece that you tried, it may affect the overall comfort of the piece as some fabrics are softer or have more give than other fabrics. Some, but not all, upholstery companies may warranty the fabric for one year against manufacturer’s defects. Please be aware that if you allow any animal on your upholstery at any time, it voids any and all fabric warranties. Please refer to the warranty card(s) on your new upholstery for specific manufacturer’s warranties.

HAND MADE ITEMS: Your new upholstery is largely or in some cases, entirely hand made. Therefore, some variations from the floor models may occur. There may be some very slight variations in dimensions. Also, because these are hand upholstered items, some slight unevenness in welts, skirts, or fabric patterns may occur. This is part of the beauty of having a hand upholstered item. Arm caps, if provided or purchased separately, are made by the manufacturer from excess fabric, so the fit may vary slightly from piece to piece and the patterns may not line up on your upholstery exactly.
OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Please do not allow anyone to jump on your new furniture; to do so may damage interior components and may void your warranty. Also do not sit on the arms as these are not designed to support a full body weight. Stains and spills on your new upholstery are not covered unless you purchased the stain protection warranty. Please note that if you alter your upholstered furniture in any way, you void any warranty and Barbo’s reserves the right to deny service to any and all altered pieces.
FABRIC SLEEP SOFA INFORMATION: Sleep sofas are a wonderful purchase for extra sleeping space for guests, but they are not designed or meant to be used daily as a bed. Usage of this kind is considered excessive, and will cause the sleep sofa to wear out prematurely. Excessive use of this kind is not covered under warranty. Sleep sofa mattresses are warrantied for normal use for a period of one year from the date of pickup or delivery. Also, it is not advisable to leave sheets on the sleep sofa mattress when not in use. Remember, sleep sofa mattresses are specially designed to fold, so creases at the fold lines are normal. Also, just like upholstery that “breaks in,” sleep sofa mattresses will compress and soften with time. Sleep sofa mechanisms are made up of many metal moving parts. Some creaking or similar noises may occur as these parts move.
HOW TO AVOID DAMAGE FROM SUN AND HEAT: If possible, avoid placing leather in direct sunlight or near extreme heat. To do so may cause uneven and/or premature fading or premature leather and/or foam deterioration. Leather fading is not warrantied by Barbo’s or by leather manufactures.
HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR LEATHER: Leather is a natural product that breathes and has many unique characteristics. It is recommended that the consumer should apply a leather protection cream to aniline leathers before use and again every three months following the directions on the bottle. All leathers should have their moisture restored twice a year by using a leather conditioner, again following the directions on the bottle. Pay particular attention to the head rests, arms and seats as these areas receive the most body contact. Keep materials such as bleach, paint, nail polish and remover away from your leather. On finished leather, you may attempt to clean spills immediately with a soft, damp cloth. Aniline leather may require a special cleaner. However, on any leather, particularly aniline or other unprotected leathers, not all stains from spills and/or hair/body oils can be removed completely, instead they become part of the leather. These add to the well worn look, charm and uniqueness of beautiful leathers. PLEASE BE AWARE that excessive oils, particularly hair and skin oils from someone who is taking medication, can crack, stain, or discolor leathers and leather finishes. Therefore, we recommend the use of protective covers for the headrest and arms of any leather seating item as this type of damage is not covered by any warranty.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT LEATHERS: Leather’s natural characteristics can sometimes cause dye lot variations from leather or floor samples. Also, leather may have unique marks, scars or wrinkles that were a part of the animal’s hide. These unique characteristics are all apart of the beauty of real leather furniture. Some, but not all, leather companies may warranty the leather for one year against manufacturer’s defects. Please be aware that if you allow any animal on your leather furniture at any time, it voids any and all leather warranties. Please refer to the warranty card(s) on your new leather furniture for specific manufacturer’s warranties.

HOW TO AVOID DAMAGE FROM SUN AND HEAT: If possible, avoid placing fabric or leather recliners in direct sunlight or near extreme heat. To do so may cause uneven and/or premature fading or premature fabric & leather and/or foam deterioration. Fabric or leather fading is not warrantied by Barbo’s or by upholstery / leather manufacturers.
HOW TO KEEP YOU RECLINER LOOKING FRESH: Even though you will eventually see some core compression and any fabric may develop “comfort” wrinkles as you settle in to your new recliner, you can keep your recliner looking as fresh as possible. Regular vacuuming to remove debris can help to keep your recliner looking fresh.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Please do not allow anyone to jump on your new recliner; to do so may damage interior components and may void your warranty. Also do not sit on the arms or the open footrest as these are not designed to support a full body weight. Stains and spills on your new recliner are not covered unless you purchased the stain protection warranty. Please note that if you alter or try to personally repair your recliner, you void any warranty and Barbo’s reserves the right to deny service to any and all altered pieces.
HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR NEW SLEEP SET: To properly care for your new sleep set, be sure it is installed correctly on a sturdy metal bed frame or bed with a center support(s) for queen and king sizes. To keep the wear on your new mattress even, it should be rotated on a regular basis. We recommend that this be done weekly during the first month. Afterwards, a monthly mattress rotation is recommended.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR NEW SLEEP SET: A new sleep set can feel firmer than the floor model that you tried because it needs time to “break in” and conform to you. During the first 60 – 90 days, all new mattresses will soften a bit as a result of “breaking in.” Body impressions up to 1 1/2″ are a normal occurrence in new mattresses. This indicates that the mattress’ comfort layers are conforming to a person’s individual body. If you feel you would like to help minimize these body impressions, you can rotate the mattress throughout its life as discussed above. And remember, as most people have been sleeping on the same sleep set for quite some time, it is natural that it may take time for you to get used to your new sleep set.
NEW FURNITURE ODOR: Just like a shiny new car, your new sleep set may have a “new car,” better known as a “new furniture” smell. These odors are normal and caused by the various materials used in its construction. A new sleep sets remains wrapped, for your protection, until it is in its new home, therefore your sleep set just needs some time to air out. These mild “new furniture” odors will dissipate over time.
OTHER INFORMATION OF NOTE: If for any reason your mattress is found to have a defect during its warranty period, please remember that any stains or spills, even on a defective mattress, voids your warranty and the mattress will not be accepted back either by Barbo’s or by the mattress manufacturer. This is in compliance with state and federal laws that protect public health. Purchase a water / stain proof mattress pad to protect your mattress against staining and soiling. Barbo’s does not accept returns or exchanges on any sleep set for any other reason other than defects covered under warranty. We do not accept returns for comfort issues. Also, if you did not buy a new foundation or boxspring with your new mattress, please remember that mattress companies will not honor their warranties if a new mattress is placed on an old foundation. The reason for this is if the old foundation is defective internally, it may cause your new mattress to fail.
Do not allow anyone to jump on your new mattress or foundation; to do so may damage interior components and thus may void your warranty. Please DO NOT remove the tag (law label). The information on this tag will be needed if there any issues with your new sleep set. If you alter your mattress and/or foundation in any way, you also void your warranty.
HOW TO AVOID PREMATURE AGING: It is recommended, regardless of the material of your outdoor furniture, that you invest in covers for all your outdoor furniture. The sun, water and dirt can all lead to bleaching and other damage which can contribute to premature aging. This type of damage can be greatly reduced with the use of a waterproof cover. It can also make seasonal cleaning a breeze.
HOW TO KEEP YOUR OUTDOOR FURNITURE LOOKING FRESH: We also recommend that you clean all outdoor furniture four to five times per year. This should be done at the start of each season, at least twice during the summer, and before you put your furniture away for the winter.
Cleaning for plastic and/or all-weather wicker furniture is simple. Wipe down with a damp cloth then use a gentle cleaner that is free of chlorine, bleach or scrubbing/abrasive particles. It is especially important to check the labels of any product before you use it on plastic as corrosive ingredients will deteriorate and damage your plastic pieces. To be safe, dilute your product with water before you use it on any plastic surfaces. It is also possible to protect plastic furniture with a layer of car wax to keep the elements from damaging the shiny surface.
To clean any cushions on your outdoor furniture be sure to check the tags for any manufacturer’s instructions specific to the brand or fabric type. For synthetics and waterproof fabrics, it is recommended that you vacuum all cushions first, then wipe down with a damp cloth first to clean dirt and dust. After removing dirt, use a solution of diluted dish soap and water to clean deeply without damaging fabric.
For Aluminum, wipe down with a damp cloth and mild dishwashing detergent and then gently rinse with a hose.
We do not recommend using a power washer at all unless the manufacturer specifically indicates a piece is power-washer-friendly; this style of cleaning can damage many materials.
Allow your furniture to dry completely before using again or covering it up.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT MOLD AND MILDEW: Mold and mildew are a common threat to outdoor patio furniture. Whether you live in a climate with high levels of humidity, or you store your furniture indoors during the winter time, you run the risk of acquiring mold and mildew. To help avoid mold and mildew issues frequently check your furniture for signs of mold and mildew. Make sure to use well-ventilated furniture covers for summer to avoid creating a muggy storage environment and durable covers that are resistant to moisture for winter storage, especially if the furniture is going to be stored where it is exposed to snow and rain. Storing your outdoor furniture in a cool, dry area when not in use will greatly extend its life span. As recommended above, clean your outdoor set regularly to prevent mold and mildew buildup. Remove signs of fungal growth as soon as you spot it before it spreads. If you discover mold or mildew scrub the affected area with an ammonia mixture, mild bleach, or hydrogen peroxide to kill the growth and keep it from spreading.

OTHER IMPORTANT IMFORMATION: Please do not allow anyone to jump on your outdoor furniture; to do so may damage interior components and will void your warranty. Also do not sit on the arms as these are not designed to support a full body weight. Stains, spills, rips or tears or general, everyday dirt and grime buildup on your new outdoor furniture are not covered under warranty. Please note that if you alter your Outdoor furniture in any way, you void any warranty and Barbo’s reserves the right to deny service to any and all altered pieces.
HOW TO AVOID DAMAGE FROM SUN AND HEAT: Avoid placing area rugs direct sunlight or near extreme heat. To do so may cause uneven and/or premature fading and/or damage. If exposed to direct sunlight, rug colors typically fade over time, even if they are fade resistant. Damage and/or fading caused by excessive Sun and Heat are not covered under warranty.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT AREA RUGS: No two rugs are the same. Slight color variations are common and expected for area rugs, as dye lots may change over a period of time. All rugs will shed to some degree, particularly rugs that contain wool. Shedding will subside over time, depending on traffic and wear. It typically takes 20-25 vacuums, at a minimum, to curtail shedding. Some will even shed for the lifetime of the rug. Loose fibers, or “sprouts”, are a normal part of the break-in process of rugs. To remove sprouts, use a small pair of scissors to snip them off even with the pile. Do not pull the fiber out, as this can cause a deterioration of the backing. If your rug has been rolled or folded for shipping, it may include creases. Creases should disappear within a week or two when the rug is laid out flat. Reverse rolling the rug overnight will help. If any furniture and/or other heavy items are placed on your area rug, denting of the rug under those items will occur, regardless of what material(s) are in the rug. These dents may lessen over time once the furniture and/or heavy object is moved. Hoever, some dents may stay in the area rug depeding on the material the rug is made from and how long the item was placed on the area rug. Shedding, Sprouts, Creases and Dents are NOT considered defects and therefore are not covered by Barbo’s or any rug manufacturer’s warranty.
NEW RUG ODOR: Just like a shiny new car, your beautiful new area rug may have a “new” smell. These odors are normal and caused by the various materials used in its construction. Since area rugs remained wrapped for protection in our warehouse, your new rug just needs some time to air out. These “new rug” odors will dissipate over time.
HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR AREA RUG: Area Rugs of all materials and constructions should be rotated every 3-6 months to balance color and evenly distribute wear. Please be aware that some materials are more delicate and require special care. For example, while viscose lends a high sheen, luster and softness to a rug, it is a material made of wood pulp that is broken down and formed into fibers. These fibers are much more delicate than wool and not advised for high-traffic areas. In addition, special care must be taken when cleaning. Please see more details on cleaning your viscose rug in the Special Cleaning Guideline section below.
How to Vacuum Your Rug: Canister vacuums without beater bars are the optimal type of vacuum to use on rugs. Brooms and manual sweepers are also a gentle and effective way to clean rugs. Many upright vacuums are super high powered. The high suction can pull out the threads from the back of a rug and cause “sprouts.” Therefore, it is advised that the handheld attachment be used to vacuum your area rug, whenever possible. If you choose not to (or are unable to use) the handheld attachment on your upright vacuum, make sure to turn off the vacuum’s beater bar, as it can pull fibers from the face of the rug and cause the rug to fuzz. If the beater bar cannot be turned off, set it on the highest position possible before vacuuming. Then, carefully place the vacuum on the rug. If the rug has serged (finished) edges, refrain from continuously running the vacuum over the edges, as this will loosen fibers around the edges and cause them to deteriorate. Avoid running the vacuum over the fringes at the ends of the rug, as fraying may occur. Use the handheld attachment to clean the fringes. If a rug is reversible, make sure to vacuum both sides. This will remove grit and grime that can prematurely wear out your rug.
HOW TO CLEAN YOUR AREA RUG: Clean all spills immediately. Once a stain is set, it becomes much more difficult to clean.
Never rub a spill. This forces the spill deeper into the rug. Instead, blot the stain with a clean white cloth. Use clean water to remove any residual cleaner and dry towels to absorb remaining moisture.
Wool Rugs – With a dry cotton towel or white paper towel, blot out stain as much as possible. Scrape off any food or debris with a dull instrument. Mix a very small amount of dish soap with a cup of cold water. With a clean sponge and soap mix (avoid using excessive water), gently remove remainder of the stain and then blot the area with a dry towel. Avoid excessive heat or agitation. Wool rugs are more prone to bleeding and staining than synthetic rugs.
Synthetic Fiber Rugs (Olefin | Polypropylene | Nylon) – With a dry cotton towel or white paper towel, blot out stain as much as possible. Scrape off any food or debris with a dull instrument. Mix a very small amount of dish soap with a cup of cold water. With a clean sponge and soap mix, remove the remainder of stain and then blot the area with a dry towel.
Indoor/Outdoor Rugs – With a dry cotton towel or white paper towel, blot out stain as much as possible. Scrape off any food or debris with a dull instrument. Mix a very small amount of dish soap with a cup of cold water. With a clean sponge and soap mix, remove remainder of the stain. Allow the area to dry. For all-over cleaning, spray with a mixture of soap and water and rinse with a garden hose.
Natural Fiber Rugs (Jute | Hemp | Coir | Sisal) – Natural fiber rugs inherently have loose fibers and knots. Regularly vacuum rug on low power setting, making sure to vacuum from different angles. Loose threads on the face of the rug should be trimmed with household scissors. To avoid unraveling or damaging the rug, threads on the rug’s face should never be pulled. Spills should be gently blotted with a clean, undyed cloth to absorb as much of the spill as possible and prevent spreading. Work from the outer edges of the spill towards the center. If applying cleaning solvents, test on a small area first. For stubborn stains, use a professional cleaning service that specializes in wool rugs. Do not dry clean, as strong cleaning chemicals may damage or fade the rug.
Shag Rugs – Spray extraction, along with use of a wool-approved product, can be used to clean shag rugs. Shedding is normal for wool products and decreases over time. Do not pull yarn out, as this may result in damage to the rug. Canister vacuums without a beater bar are most effective in cleaning shag rugs. Vacuums with beater bars and/or brushes, or those set too low, may abrade the face of the rug.
Viscose Rugs – Viscose rugs are constructed of wood cellulose fibers, which absorb moisture easily, therefore cleaning with water not advised. Regular Vacuuming (without a beater bar) of the rug will help with overall maintenance of the rug. Specail attention should be made to edges and areas of high foot traffic. Any wet spills should be mopped up immediately. Most spills respond very well to this treatment. If cleaning should become necessary, dry cleaning is preferable. However, always check with the dry cleaner since some harsh chemicals may cause discoloration to the fibers. DO NOT spot clean with water as cellulose fibers will turn yellow or discolor when wet and may stain after cleaning. Lighter colors are more susceptible to staining and large, solid areas will show staining more easily. Avoid placing viscose rugs in high-traffic areas to minimize the need for cleaning.
Wool & Viscose Rugs – Viscose rugs are constructed of wood cellulose fibers, which absorb moisture easily, therefore cleaning with water is not advised. RUG PADS: A rug pad provides a durable, long-lasting foundation that protects a rug for years to come. The proper rug pad can extend the life of the rug by reducing wear and tear and enhancing air circulation between the rug and floor. A rug pad can also help to prevent accidents by holding the rug in place, minimizing movement and slippage. Rug pads also add extra comfort underfoot by providing additional cushioning and support, as well as protect all floor types, including both hard surfaces and carpets.
OTHER IMPORTANT IMFORMATION: General/ everyday dirt and grime buildup, stains, spills, rips or tears that occur after you pick-up or take delivery of your area rug are not covered by warranties. Please note that if you alter your upholstered furniture in any way, you void any warranty and Barbo’s reserves the right to deny service to any and all altered pieces.
